Petrichor are a doom metal band from Leeds, West Yorkshire and they just dropped 'No Silver Lining' and rifftastic got a look in early so lets do this.
As with doom bands it needs two things....solid doomy riffs and haunting atmosphere, 'Petrichor' have both and merge a variety of elements into their music thus creating a sound that's solely theirs. With haunting 'My Dying Bride'-esque vocals from Nate and Jon accompanied by 'Pallas Athena`s' Vicky guesting on the opening track, a back and forth lovers lament with 'This Too Must Die'. With this grand emotional tale of love lost, you really feel that theme throughout the whole album. After the tone was set by the first track it makes sense the doom comes in hard and it delivers...with nihilistic chugs and emotional and aggressive vocals the scene is created with sense of dread that lingers.
The album delivers a dark emotional listen with varied vocals from Jon creating a powerful atmosphere reminding me of the funeral doom greats and sowing a tale further of loss and misery. By the end of the album I was a little sad which I suppose it did its job, but I felt the album was a little empty, possibly because there's more room for the band to grow and cultivate their sound. Negatives are few and subjective, the mix dips sometimes with odd sounding drums and FX, the vocals sometimes sound too forward in the mix and does take away from the listen at a few moments. But the album remains consistent and bleak providing the listener with some melancholy drama and theatre keeping your attention.
Overview: Emotional, grandiose and bleak, Petrichor have incredible potential to be one of the high standing funeral doom bands in the scene.
