DARK DOOM - spirit of the forest album review

DARK DOOM is a Black / Death / Melodic metal solo project from Derby, UK. this is their debut album "spirit of the forest".

The album starts off atmospheric with sound of walking on snow, whispers, wind and nature really setting the scene for the album, It soon blows into aggressive bleak black metal with pounding blastbeats and Ishahn sounding vocals shrieking this has elements of some of the 90s BM greats.

The album unfortunately is too similar to whats come before and the atmospheric sections really help make the album stand out and bring some grit (Kultimatum), The title track is definitely the strongest track on the album so far with some Carpathian forest sounding groove and harsh vox.

"Serve or Suffer" is aggressive and ear pounding but it does not strike at me as much as spirit did and seems to lack some depth but accompanied with "faded soul" maintaining that signature black metal sound and closing the ep on a high.

overview:

Enjoyed this from start to finish there was only one dip in momentum during and was picked up well with the song afterwards, I wish there was more dark atmosphere and death metal to help meld the context of the BM moments to sound more epic and gritty and delve into the abyss! looking forward to what DARK DOOM does next.

7/10 RIFFS
